Deja Vu’s
Showgirl of the Year Contest
Posted by Lilith on October 22, 2009
The last time Ash and I visited Deja Vu was about two and a half years ago, when we were celebrating our 2nd year anniversary. We decided to visit a strip club we had never visited before and we ended up at Deju Vu, which is located at 3247 Industrial behind the Fashion Show Mall. The experience was probably one of the worst of strip club experiences we’ve had.
We arrived there and were told there was a cover, even though we were locals. We were not impressed, but we paid and made our way to the bar. After a few minutes the “bartender” came over and asked what we wanted. At the time we were drinking rum and diets and asked for two. The “bartender” kind of laughed and said, “Sorry. We only serve juice and soft drinks.” What? Excuse me? What kind of strip club doesn’t serve alcohol? Seriously! What kind of strip club … at that moment, everything came together and I realized that we weren’t in just a topless strip club. We were in a fully nude strip club. A place, I felt, I never needed to be. Topless clubs were good for me. My mood immediately changed. I was not happy. I was not tipsy. I couldn’t get into the grove of this place. Needless to say, we didn’t stay long, and we never went back.
That is, not until last night, when we attended the Showgirl of the Year event. The club is really beautiful, with tall red velvet booths that line the perimeter of the club, countless small tables and arm chairs around the stage, and multiple posh private rooms. Ash says the stage is a little eighties looking, but maybe that’s why I like it. The back drop of the stage is almost a mosaic of mirrors – rectangular pieces about 18 inches long, 6 inches wide. It’s cool looking. I remember the only thing I liked about the first experience was the look of the club.
The club was packed, which was surprising to Ash and me. A large percentage of the crowd was older Asian men, and I’m guessing by their promotional material – they have an English version, Spanish version, Korean version and Japanese version – that crowd is common.
There were three stages of the event. The first was a couch routine. The candidates picked another stripper or patron to sit on a couch and they danced for/on them. Most of the girls chose other girls, but two picked guys. I think there were six or seven girls who competed. They were all very talented dancers, but some were more pole dancers while others were more strippers. The pole dancers were pretty amazing.
After a few girls performed, the Pit Crew came on stage to clean up, which was hilarious and extremely elaborate. Two girls, dressed in hardly anything climbed up the pole and back down it to clean it for the upcoming strippers. Waitresses were on their hands and knees cleaning the floors and bouncers were up there changing sets. It was something we had never seen before, and it was highly entertaining.
But the most entertaining moment of the night was the dance performance after the pit crew had totally changed over the stage. A backdrop of a cabin in the forest was hung in front of the mosaic mirrors. A six-foot cardboard cut out of the seven dwarfs and a framed face (imitating the mirror on the wall) was hung next to the cabin. We knew we were in for something good. The actual Hi-Ho song from the Disney animated series started playing (in a strip club … would you eer expect that, because I would not!) and a stripper in a Snow White costume came out. She immediately took off the top and started dancing and doing pole tricks. After a few minutes of that song, Evanescene’s Snow White Queen played. The dancer eventually had nothing on and continued her routine. The whole presentation was impressive, so much so that Ash and I couldn’t believe what was going on. It was the craziest thing we have ever seen in a strip club. After her performance was over, we decided to go. We just couldn’t imagine that the night was going to get any better after that, and this time we wanted to leave on good note.
The night was fun. I don’t know if we’ll ever go when an event isn’t taking place, but it was fun and definitely entertaining!
Although Ash and I can’t write about the results from our perspective, the results were posted on Deja Vu’s myspace. And the winners are: Maddison in 3rd place. Daisy in 2rd and the 2010 Showgirl of the Year is Vanity. Congrats Maddison, Daisy and Vanity!
